You built a Wix website. Now you need people to actually find it.
Good news: Wix is perfectly capable of ranking on Google. The platform has come a long way, and if you optimize correctly, you can compete with anyone in your local market.
This isn't theory—this is the exact checklist I use for client sites that rank on page 1.
Why Wix SEO Matters for Small Businesses
If your website doesn't show up when someone searches for your service, you're invisible. That's lost leads, lost customers, lost revenue.
SEO (search engine optimization) is how you fix that. It's not magic—it's just making sure Google understands what your site is about and trusts it enough to show it to searchers.
The Complete Wix SEO Checklist
1. Set Your Site Title and Description
Your homepage's SEO title and description work as your site title. In the editor, open Pages, click the More Actions icon next to your homepage, then click SEO Basics.
Site Title: Include your business name + what you do + location (if local). Example: Consult With Ari | Wix Website Design + SEO for Small Businesses
Site Description: 2 sentences max. What you do + who it's for. Example: Wix websites, SEO, and conversion improvements that turn traffic into leads—built for small businesses.
2. Optimize Every Page Title and Description
Each page needs its own unique title and meta description.
Where to edit: In the editor, open Pages, click the More Actions icon next to the page, then click SEO Basics.
Page Title Format:
- Homepage: [Main Service] That [Outcome] | [Business Name]
- Service Page: [Specific Service] for [Target Audience] | [Business Name]
- Blog Post: [Post Title] | [Business Name]
Keep titles under 60 characters. Write descriptions under 155 characters.
3. Use H1 and H2 Tags Correctly
Every page needs ONE H1 (your main heading). This should match your page title and include your target keyword naturally.
Example for a law firm homepage:
- H1: Law Firm Website Design That Builds Trust and Gets Consult Calls
Use H2 tags for sections on the page. These should describe what each section covers and include related keywords when natural.
4. Write for Humans, Optimize for Google
Stop keyword-stuffing. Google is smart enough to know when you're being spammy.
Instead:
- Use your main keyword once in the first paragraph
- Use it naturally 2-3 more times in the content
- Use variations and related terms throughout
- Write like you're talking to a real person
If the keyword feels forced, rewrite the sentence.
5. Add Alt Text to Every Image
Google can't see images. Alt text tells Google what the image shows.
Where to edit: Click the image → Settings icon → "What's in the image?"
How to write it: Describe the image in 1 sentence. Include your keyword if it fits naturally.
Bad: Image1.jpg Good: Modern law firm website design on laptop showing homepage
6. Make Your URLs Clean and Descriptive
Wix sometimes gives pages clumsy URLs, like when you duplicate a page. Fix them.
Where to edit: Pages → More Actions icon next to the page → SEO Basics → URL slug
Bad: /about-us-page-1 Good: /about
Include your target keyword in the URL when it makes sense.
7. Speed Up Your Site
Slow sites rank lower. Period.
How to improve speed on Wix:
- Compress images before uploading (use TinyPNG)
- Limit the number of apps and widgets
- Avoid auto-playing videos on the homepage
- Use Wix's image optimization feature
Test your speed at PageSpeed Insights.
8. Set Up Google Search Console
This is how you track your rankings and see what's working.
How to connect:
- In your dashboard, go to Marketing & SEO and open the SEO Setup Checklist
- Click Connect to Google (you'll need a Premium plan and a connected domain)
- Wix verifies your site and submits your sitemap for you
Check it monthly to see which keywords are bringing traffic.
9. Build Internal Links
Link from one page on your site to another. This helps Google understand your site structure.
Where to add links:
- Link from your homepage to your service pages
- Link from blog posts to relevant service pages
- Link from service pages to your contact page
Use descriptive anchor text: Learn more about Wix website design (not click here).
10. Create Location Pages (If You're Local)
If you serve specific cities or neighborhoods, create dedicated pages for each one.
Page structure:
- H1: [Service] in [City]
- Content about why you serve that area
- Testimonials from clients in that area
- Clear CTA to contact you
Example: /wix-website-design-new-york
11. Keep Your Google Business Profile Up to Date
If you're a local business, claim and optimize your Google Business Profile.
Must-haves:
- Complete business information (hours, phone, address)
- High-quality photos
- Regular posts (weekly if possible)
- Respond to every review
12. Write Blog Posts That Target Keywords
Blogging isn't dead. It's one of the best ways to rank for long-tail keywords.
What to write about:
- Common questions your customers ask
- How-to guides related to your service
- Local industry news or trends
Each post should target ONE main keyword and link to a relevant service page.
Common Wix SEO Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving default page titles: Every page says Home | Site Name
- No alt text on images: Google has no idea what your images show
- Duplicate content: Using the same text on multiple pages
- Ignoring mobile: Most traffic is mobile—test your site on your phone
- Not using H1 tags: Or worse, using multiple H1s per page
How Long Does Wix SEO Take to Work?
Be realistic. SEO isn't instant.
Timeline:
- 1-3 months: Google starts indexing and ranking new pages
- 3-6 months: You'll see steady traffic growth if you're optimizing correctly
- 6-12 months: Significant rankings and consistent leads (if you're in a competitive niche)
Local businesses in smaller markets see results faster than national competitors in crowded industries.
