SEO agencies will tell you that you absolutely need to rank on Google or your business will die. That's not true.
SEO is a tool. Like any tool, it's only useful if it solves a specific problem you actually have. Here's when SEO makes sense and when it doesn't.
When You DON'T Need SEO
If your calendar is already full, you don't need more visibility. You need to either raise your prices, hire help, or get better at saying no. SEO won't solve that problem. It'll make it worse.
If most of your clients find you through word-of-mouth, congratulations. That's the best marketing there is. Spend your money on taking care of existing clients, not chasing search rankings.
Some industries just don't work on Google. If your ideal clients find vendors through industry connections, use specialized directories or marketplaces, or make decisions based on in-person meetings, then SEO probably isn't your best bet.
When You DO Need SEO
If you're a dentist, plumber, lawyer, or any local service provider, people ARE searching for you on Google. "[Your city] + [your service]" gets searched every day. If you're not showing up, you're leaving money on the table.
Paid ads work, but they're expensive. And the moment you stop paying, the leads stop coming. SEO costs money upfront but delivers long-term results. Once you rank, you get "free" traffic month after month.
Ranking on page 1 for your main keywords does two things: it brings in leads, and it makes you look like the authority in your space. When prospects compare you to competitors and see you ranked higher, it shifts their perception.
What SEO Actually Costs
It depends on how competitive your industry is and how much work your site needs. Basic local SEO for a small service business is a very different job from trying to win in a crowded national market.
Every project I take on is quoted before it starts, based on what the business actually needs. If you want a number for yours, book a free 15–30 minute call.
If you can't set aside a budget for several months, you might not be ready. And that's okay.
SEO isn't a sprint. It's a marathon. Expect several months before you see real results, and longer before it really pays off. If you need leads this month, SEO isn't the answer. Try Google Ads or Facebook Ads instead.
What You Should Do Instead (If SEO Isn't Right)
Before you invest in getting traffic, make sure your site converts the traffic you already have. An ugly website that turns visitors into leads beats a beautiful site that doesn't.
Ask happy clients for referrals. Make it easy. Incentivize it. Track it. One good referral partnership can be worth more than page 1 rankings.
Google Ads or Facebook Ads can deliver leads in days, not months. Start with a small budget, test what works, then scale.
The Bottom Line
SEO makes sense if people are actively searching for what you do, you can keep investing for several months before you see a return, and you're ready to create content consistently.
It doesn't make sense if you need leads immediately, your calendar is already full, or your industry doesn't work that way.
