Why Your Website Isn't Getting Leads (And How to Fix It)

Your website gets traffic but no inquiries? The problem isn't traffic—it's conversion. Here are the 7 most common reasons websites fail to generate leads and exactly how to fix each one.

You built a website. Maybe you're even getting traffic. But the phone isn't ringing and the contact form is empty.

Sound familiar?

The good news: This is fixable. The bad news: You probably have multiple issues stacked on top of each other.

Let's diagnose what's broken and fix it.

The 7 Reasons Your Website Isn't Converting

1. Your Value Proposition Is Unclear

The Problem: Visitors land on your homepage and have no idea what you do or why they should care.

If someone can't figure out what you offer in 5 seconds, they leave. That's it. Game over.

The Fix:

  • Write a clear H1 headline that says: What you do + who it's for + the outcome
  • Example: Wix Website Design That Turns Visitors Into Leads
  • Avoid clever taglines. Be direct.

Test this: Show your homepage to a friend. Ask them what you do. If they hesitate, rewrite it.

2. You're Asking for Too Much, Too Soon

The Problem: Your contact form asks for their life story before they're ready to commit.

A visitor who just found you doesn't want to fill out a 10-field form. They're not there yet.

The Fix:

  • Reduce your contact form to 3 fields max: Name, Email, Message
  • Offer a low-commitment first step: Book a free 30-minute call instead of Request a quote
  • Use a scheduling tool like Calendly so they can book instantly

3. No Clear Call-to-Action

The Problem: Visitors don't know what to do next, so they do nothing.

If your site doesn't guide people toward a specific action, they'll just browse and leave.

The Fix:

  • Add ONE primary CTA button above the fold on every page
  • Make it specific: Book Free Consultation (not Learn More)
  • Repeat that CTA near the bottom of the page
  • Use contrasting button colors so the CTA stands out

4. Your Site Looks Outdated or Unprofessional

The Problem: Design matters. If your site looks like it's from 2010, visitors assume your business is outdated too.

First impressions happen in milliseconds. If your site screams amateur, you've lost credibility before they read a word.

The Fix:

  • Clean, modern design with plenty of white space
  • Professional photos (no generic stock images if possible)
  • Consistent fonts and colors
  • Mobile-friendly layout (test on your phone)

If you can't design it yourself, hire someone. It's cheaper than losing leads every day.

5. Missing Social Proof

The Problem: Visitors don't trust you yet. They need proof that others have hired you and been happy.

Without testimonials, reviews, or case studies, you're asking people to take a risk on an unknown.

The Fix:

  • Add testimonials on your homepage (real ones, with names and photos)
  • Link to your Google reviews or industry-specific review sites
  • Show logos of clients you've worked with (if B2B)
  • Add a "Results" or "Case Studies" section

Even 2-3 good testimonials make a huge difference.

6. Your Website Is Slow

The Problem: If your site takes more than a few seconds to load, a lot of visitors leave before it finishes, especially on phones.

Speed kills conversions. Slow sites frustrate users and rank lower on Google.

The Fix:

  • Test your speed at PageSpeed Insights
  • Compress images before uploading (use TinyPNG)
  • Remove unnecessary widgets and plugins
  • Use a fast hosting platform (Wix is solid if configured correctly)

7. You're Not Following Up

The Problem: Someone fills out your contact form… and then hears nothing for 2 days.

By the time you reply, they've already hired a competitor.

The Fix:

  • Set up email notifications so you see form submissions immediately
  • Respond within 1 hour (seriously)
  • If you can't respond fast, use an auto-reply: Thanks for reaching out. I'll get back to you within 24 hours.
  • Better yet: Use a scheduling link so they book a call instantly

How to Prioritize Fixes

You probably have multiple issues. Here's the order to fix them:

  1. Clarify your homepage headline (5 minutes)
  2. Add a clear CTA above the fold (10 minutes)
  3. Simplify your contact form (5 minutes)
  4. Add testimonials (30 minutes)
  5. Test and fix speed (varies)
  6. Improve design (hire help if needed)
  7. Set up instant follow-up (30 minutes)

Start at the top. You'll see results before you finish the list.
