Wix Site Speed: What Actually Helps (And What's a Waste of Time)

Your Wix site is slow. Visitors are leaving before it loads, and that can hurt you in Google too.

You've read articles about site speed. Some say compress images. Others say remove apps. Someone mentioned CDNs and caching.

Here's what actually matters, based on the fixes that make the biggest difference on real Wix sites.

Why Site Speed Matters

For Users: Many mobile visitors leave if a page takes more than a few seconds to load.

For Google: Google says its ranking systems use Core Web Vitals, which measure how fast and stable a page feels. Speed won't make up for weak content, but it can help when you're up against pages that are just as good.

For Conversions: Every extra second of waiting gives visitors another reason to give up before they call or fill out a form.

Speed isn't optional.

The Wix Speed Test: Where to Start

Before you change anything, test your current speed:

1. Go to PageSpeed Insights
2. Enter your URL
3. Look at your mobile score (that's what matters most)

A score of:

• 90-100: Excellent
• 50-89: Needs work
• 0-49: Serious problems

Plenty of Wix sites land in the "needs work" range. Let's fix that.

What Actually Speeds Up Wix Sites

1. Keep Heavy Images Out of the Top of the Page

Wix already compresses the images you upload and serves them in a lighter format (AVIF) on your live site, so you don't need to run every photo through a compression tool. What still slows pages down is too many big images, slideshows and galleries near the top, where they have to load first.

The Fix:

• Use one strong image at the top instead of a slideshow or several images
• Move galleries further down the page and add a "Load More" button

1. Only files over 25MB need shrinking before you upload, since Wix won't accept them

This alone can make a big difference to your load time.

2. Let Wix's Built-In Image Handling Do Its Job

Wix's help center says it resizes, compresses and lazy loads your images automatically, so there's nothing to switch on.

Lazy loading means Wix shows a light placeholder first and loads the full-quality image in the background, so the page appears faster.

3. Remove Unused Apps and Widgets

Every app you install adds code to your site. That code has to load.

What to remove:

• Apps you installed and never configured
• Multiple chat widgets (pick one)
• Social media feeds that auto-play videos
• Any app you're not actively using

How to check: Go to My Apps in your Wix dashboard. If you don't remember adding it, remove it.

4. Limit Video Auto-Play

Auto-playing videos kill load times.

The Fix:

• Remove auto-play background videos from your homepage
• Use a static image with a play button instead
• If you need video, upload it to Wix Video instead of embedding YouTube or Vimeo, and keep it below the top of the page

5. Use Wix's Built-In Fonts

Custom fonts you upload add extra load time. Wix recommends using no more than 3 or 4 fonts and avoiding custom fonts where you can.

The Fix:

• Stick to Wix's built-in font library when possible
• If you must use custom fonts, limit to 2 font families max
• Avoid using 4+ font weights

6. Reduce Animations and Effects

Wix's animation features are cool. They're also slow.

What to limit:

• Parallax scrolling effects
• Complex hover animations
• Reveal-on-scroll for every element

The balance: Use animations sparingly for impact, not everywhere.

7. Optimize Your Homepage First

Your homepage gets the most traffic. Optimize it first.

Priority fixes for homepage:

• Compress hero image
• Remove auto-play video
• Limit to 3-5 sections max above the fold
• Move non-critical elements below the fold

What Doesn't Matter as Much

❌ Changing Hosting Providers

Wix is the host. You can't change it. And Wix's infrastructure is fast. The problem is usually your content, not their servers.

❌ Obsessing Over Plugins

Yes, plugins slow things down. But unless you have 10+ apps, this isn't your main issue. Fix images first.

❌ Code Minification

Wix handles this automatically. You can't manually minify code. Don't waste time trying.

❌ CDN Settings

Wix uses a CDN by default. It's already optimized. You don't need to configure anything.

The Short List for Wix Speed

If you do nothing else, do this:

1. Trim heavy images, slideshows and galleries from the top of each page
2. Check your Site Speed dashboard in Wix to see which pages are slowest
3. Remove auto-play videos
4. Delete unused apps

Those 4 actions will get you most of the results.

Testing After Changes

1. Make your changes
2. Publish your site (changes don't count until published)
3. Wait 5 minutes
4. Test again at PageSpeed Insights

If you've fixed images and videos, you should see your score go up.

What Speed Should You Target?

Mobile Score:

• 50+: Acceptable for most small business sites
• 70+: Good
• 85+: Excellent

Load Time:

• Under 3 seconds on mobile = good
• Under 2 seconds = great

Don't obsess over a perfect 100. Focus on getting to "good enough" fast.
