Wix Redesign vs Rebuild: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Your Wix site needs work. But should you redesign what you have or start from scratch? Here's how to decide—and what each option involves.

By Ari Rosenberg, Wix Legend Partner

Your Wix site isn't working. It looks dated, doesn't convert, or you're just embarrassed to send people there.

Now you're wondering: Should I redesign what I have? Or burn it down and start fresh?

Here's how to decide.

The Difference Between Redesign and Rebuild

Redesign: Keep the same Wix site structure. Update the design, content, and layout. Think of it like renovating a house—same foundation, new paint and furniture.

Rebuild: Start from scratch with a blank canvas. New template (or custom design), new structure, new everything. Like tearing down the house and building new.

When to Redesign (Not Rebuild)

Redesign if:

✅ Your site structure is solid, just outdated

The pages make sense. The navigation works. It just looks old or unprofessional.

What you'll fix: Colors, fonts, images, spacing, and content copy.

Time: 1-2 weeks Cost: Lower (you're not rebuilding everything)

✅ You have good content that needs refreshing

Your services, about page, and blog posts are solid. They just need updated images and better formatting.

What you'll fix: Visuals, layout improvements, mobile optimization.

✅ Your SEO is working and you don't want to risk losing rankings

If you're ranking well on Google, a redesign keeps your URLs and structure intact. A rebuild risks losing rankings if not done carefully.

What you'll fix: Design and UX without touching URLs or site architecture.

✅ Budget or time is tight

Redesigns are faster and cheaper. If you need improvements NOW, redesign is the move.

When to Rebuild (Start Fresh)

Rebuild if:

✅ Your site structure is fundamentally broken

The navigation is confusing. Important pages are buried. Visitors can't find what they need.

Example issues:

  • Too many pages with overlapping content
  • No clear path from landing to contact
  • Services are scattered instead of organized

A fresh start lets you build the right structure.

✅ You're on a terrible template

Some Wix templates are just... bad. If your current template limits what you can do, starting fresh with a better one makes sense.

One thing to know: Wix doesn't let you swap the template on a site you've already built. A new template means a new site, and then your pages, images, plan and domain get moved over to it.

Signs you need a new template:

  • Can't make layout changes without breaking things
  • Mobile version is a mess no matter what you do
  • Template was clearly designed for a different industry

✅ Your business has evolved and the site doesn't reflect it

You started as a photographer. Now you do brand strategy and web design. Your site still says "Wedding Photographer."

When your business changes significantly, rebuild to match.

✅ You want a completely custom design

If you're hiring a designer to create a unique, custom look, rebuilding on a blank template gives them full creative control.

Redesigns are limited by the existing structure.

✅ Your site has major technical issues

Things are breaking. Pages won't load. Forms don't work. Apps conflict with each other.

Sometimes it's easier to start clean than debug a mess.

The Side-by-Side Comparison

Redesign:

  • Time: 1-2 weeks
  • Cost: Lower (quoted based on scope)
  • Risk: Low (keeps existing structure and SEO)

Rebuild:

  • Time: 3-4 weeks
  • Cost: Higher (quoted based on complexity)
  • Risk: Medium (requires careful SEO migration)

The Hybrid Approach: Smart Rebuild

Sometimes the answer is in between.

What it is: Keep the pages and content that work. Rebuild the parts that don't.

Example:

  • Keep your About and Services pages (just update design)
  • Rebuild your homepage from scratch
  • Add new pages you're missing (case studies, FAQ)

This gives you the benefits of both without the full cost of a rebuild.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Is my site structure logical? If yes → redesign. If no → rebuild.
  2. Do I have content worth keeping? If yes → redesign. If no → rebuild.
  3. Am I ranking well on Google? If yes → redesign (safer). If no → rebuild won't hurt.
  4. Do I need this done fast? If yes → redesign. If no → rebuild.
  5. Has my business changed dramatically? If yes → rebuild. If no → redesign.

What I Recommend for Most Small Businesses

Start with a redesign.

Here's why:

  • Faster to market
  • Lower risk
  • You can always rebuild later if needed

Most of the time, the problem isn't the structure. It's the design, the content, or the lack of clear calls to action (the buttons and links that tell visitors what to do next).

Fix those first. If it still doesn't work, then consider a rebuild.

How to Avoid Needing a Rebuild Every 2 Years

Pick a flexible template: Choose one that can grow with you Plan for the future: Think about pages you might add later Invest in good design now: Timeless design ages better than trendy Update content regularly: Fresh content keeps your site relevant
