Small Business Homepage That Converts: The 8 Elements You Need

Your homepage has a few seconds to convince visitors to stay. Here are the 8 essential elements every small business homepage needs to turn browsers into customers.

By Ari Rosenberg, Wix Legend Partner

Your homepage is your digital storefront. Visitors make a snap judgment within seconds: stay or leave.

Most small business homepages fail this test. They're confusing, generic, or buried in jargon.

Here are the 8 elements your homepage needs to convert visitors into leads.

Element 1: A Clear Headline That Answers "What Do You Do?"

Visitors should know what you offer instantly.

Bad Headline: Welcome to Our Site Bad Headline: Innovation Through Excellence Good Headline: Wix Website Design That Turns Visitors Into Leads

Formula: [What you do] + [Who it's for] + [Outcome they get]

Test: Show your homepage to someone unfamiliar with your business. Can they explain what you do in one sentence? If not, rewrite your headline.

Element 2: A Subheadline That Adds Context

Your subheadline explains HOW you deliver the outcome or WHO you help.

Example:

  • Headline: Wix Website Design That Turns Visitors Into Leads
  • Subheadline: I help small businesses get websites that look credible, load fast, and turn visitors into paying customers. From website rescue to SEO—real results, no jargon.

Keep it to 2-3 sentences max.

Element 3: One Clear Call-to-Action (CTA) Above the Fold

"Above the fold" means visitors see it without scrolling.

Your CTA should be:

  • Specific: "Book Free Consultation" not "Learn More"
  • Low commitment: Free call, free quote, free audit
  • Action-oriented: Use verbs (Book, Get, Schedule, Request)

Button design:

  • Contrasting color (stands out from background)
  • Large enough to see on mobile
  • Placed prominently near your headline

Element 4: Social Proof (Trust Signals)

Visitors need proof that others have hired you and been happy.

Types of social proof:

  • Star ratings (Google, Yelp, industry reviews)
  • Number of clients served
  • Logos of recognizable clients
  • Industry badges or certifications

Example: 89 five-star reviews | Wix Legend Partner | 137 completed projects

Place this near your headline or right after your hero section.

Element 5: What You Do (Services Overview)

Don't make visitors hunt for what you offer.

Include 3-5 service tiles or cards:

  • Icon or image
  • Service name
  • 1-2 sentence description
  • Link to learn more

Example:

  • Website Rescue: Fix your broken, slow, or outdated site fast
  • New Website Build: Launch a professional site that's built to bring in leads
  • SEO & Growth: Get more traffic and convert visitors to leads

Link each tile to a dedicated service page.

Element 6: Who You Help (Your Ideal Client)

If you serve everyone, you attract no one.

Option A: Industry-specific I work with: Law Firms | Dentists | Real Estate Agents | Therapists

Link each to a dedicated landing page for that vertical.

Option B: Problem-specific I help businesses that: Need a site fast | Have an outdated site | Aren't getting leads

Element 7: How You're Different (Your Process or Promise)

Why should they choose you over the next Google result?

What to highlight:

  • Your process (simple, fast, transparent)
  • Your promise to clients
  • What makes you different (no jargon, direct communication, clear quotes)

Example section: Why Clients Choose Me:

  • Direct communication—you talk to me, not a team
  • Clear quotes before work starts—no surprise invoices
  • Clear timelines—agreed before the project begins

Element 8: A Secondary CTA at the Bottom

Not everyone converts at the top. Add another CTA after they've scrolled through your homepage.

Format:

  • Headline: Ready to [outcome]?
  • Description: 1-2 sentences reminding them why they should take action
  • CTA button: Same as above the fold

Example: "Ready to fix your website? Book a free 15–30 minute call and I'll tell you exactly what to prioritize—no sales pitch."

Bonus Element: Reviews Widget or Testimonial Slider

If you have strong reviews, feature them prominently.

Where to place:

  • After your services section
  • Right before the final CTA

What to include:

  • Client name and business
  • Their problem before working with you
  • The result they got
  • Star rating if applicable

The Biggest Mistakes Small Business Homepages Make

❌ Too much text: Keep it scannable. Use short paragraphs and bullet points. ❌ Generic stock photos: Use real photos of your work, team, or clients. ❌ Buried CTA: If visitors have to search for how to contact you, they won't. ❌ Talking about yourself instead of the customer: Lead with their problem, not your story. ❌ No mobile optimization: A big share of your visitors are on their phones. Test on yours.

The Order Matters

Here's a homepage structure that works:

  1. Hero (Headline + Subheadline + CTA + Trust signals)
  2. Services overview (What you offer)
  3. Who you help (Industries or problems)
  4. Process or Why Choose You
  5. Social proof (Testimonials or reviews)
  6. Final CTA

This flow takes visitors from "What is this?" → "Is this for me?" → "Can I trust them?" → "Let's talk."

Test Your Homepage in 5 Seconds

Show your homepage to 3 people who've never seen it.

Ask them:

  1. What does this company do?
  2. Who is it for?
  3. What should I do next?

If they can't answer all three, you need to clarify.
