Dental Website Must-Haves: What Patients Actually Look For

Patients research dentists online before booking. Here are the 7 must-have elements your dental website needs to win new patient bookings.

By Ari Rosenberg, Wix Legend Partner

Your dental practice competes with a dozen others in your area.

When someone searches "dentist near me," they usually check a few websites before booking.

If your site doesn't have these 7 elements, you're losing patients to competitors.

Element 1: Online Booking (The Biggest Game-Changer)

This is #1 for a reason.

The problem: Patients have to call during business hours. They're at work. They forget. They book with a competitor who offers online scheduling.

The fix: Add online booking.

Options:

  • Zocdoc
  • Calendly
  • Booksy
  • Your practice management software's built-in scheduler (Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental)

What to offer:

  • New patient appointments
  • Cleaning appointments
  • Emergency slots

Impact: Patients can book the moment they decide, even at 10 p.m., instead of waiting to call during office hours.

One thing to check before you pick a tool: if your booking form asks about symptoms, treatment or insurance, that's protected health information under US law (HIPAA). Use a booking tool that will sign a HIPAA business associate agreement with you. Wix, for example, offers this on certain Premium plans, and Wix Bookings is one of the apps it supports.

Element 2: Clear Service Pages (What Do You Offer?)

Patients need to know if you offer the service they need.

Create dedicated pages for:

  • General Dentistry (cleanings, exams, fillings)
  • Cosmetic Dentistry (whitening, veneers, bonding)
  • Restorative (crowns, bridges, implants)
  • Emergency Dental Care
  • Pediatric Dentistry (if you see kids)
  • Orthodontics (if you offer Invisalign or braces)

Each page should include:

  • What the service is
  • Who it's for
  • What to expect (procedure overview)
  • Before/after photos (if applicable)
  • Pricing (or starting price range)
  • Online booking CTA

Element 3: Insurance and Payment Information (Upfront)

Money is a top concern. Patients want to know if they can afford you.

What to include:

  • Insurance accepted: List major plans (Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna, etc.)
  • Payment options: Cash, credit, CareCredit, payment plans
  • No insurance?: Mention in-house membership plans or discount options

Where to put it:

  • Dedicated "Insurance & Payment" page
  • Mention on homepage
  • Link from footer

Avoid: Hiding this information. If patients can't find it, they assume you're expensive.

Element 4: About the Dentist (Build Trust Fast)

Patients want to know who's going to be working on their teeth.

What to include:

  • Professional photo (smile, approachable)
  • Education (dental school, residencies)
  • Experience (years practicing, specialties)
  • Approach (gentle, family-friendly, anxiety-free)
  • Personal (family, hobbies—builds connection)

Staff bios too: Introduce your hygienists and front desk team. Patients appreciate seeing the whole team.

Element 5: Patient Reviews (Social Proof)

Dental anxiety is real. Reviews reassure nervous patients.

Where to feature reviews:

  • Homepage (3-5 featured testimonials)
  • Dedicated reviews page
  • Link to Google reviews
  • Embed Google review widget

What makes a good testimonial:

  • Real name and photo (if possible)
  • Specific service mentioned ("Dr. Smith did my implants")
  • Outcome ("pain-free," "amazing results," "gentle with my kids")

How to get more reviews: Ask every happy patient. Send a follow-up email with a direct link to leave a review.

Element 6: Hours, Location, and Contact Info (Everywhere)

Patients need this information FAST.

Where to display:

  • Header (phone number click-to-call)
  • Footer (full contact block)
  • Dedicated contact page
  • Google Business Profile (always kept up to date)

What to include:

  • Phone number (mobile-friendly click-to-call)
  • Address (with Google Maps embed)
  • Hours (include lunch breaks if applicable)
  • Email (for non-urgent questions)
  • Emergency contact (after-hours number if you offer it)

Element 7: Mobile-Friendly Design (Most Searches Happen on Phones)

Most patients search for dentists on their phones.

Your site MUST:

  • Load fast (under 3 seconds)
  • Have large, tappable buttons
  • Display phone number prominently (one tap to call)
  • Make online booking easy on mobile

Test it: Open your site on your phone right now. If it's frustrating to navigate, you're losing patients.

Bonus Elements That Help

Virtual Tour

Let patients see your office before visiting. Reduces anxiety.

How to do it:

  • 360° photos of reception, treatment rooms, waiting area
  • Embed on your homepage or About page

Before/after photos of cosmetic work (whitening, veneers, Invisalign).

Proves your cosmetic skills and gets patients excited about their results.

New Patient Specials

Offer an incentive:

  • Free exam for new patients
  • A discounted first cleaning, exam, and x-rays
  • Free whitening with first visit

Feature this prominently on your homepage.

Emergency Dental Information

Create a page for dental emergencies:

  • What to do if a tooth is knocked out
  • How to handle severe pain
  • When to call vs visit ER
  • Your after-hours contact

A page like this also gives you a chance to show up when people search "emergency dentist [city]".

Common Dental Website Mistakes

❌ No online booking (forcing patients to call) ❌ Generic stock photos (smiling models, not your actual office) ❌ Hiding insurance info (patients assume you're expensive) ❌ No clear services listed (patients don't know if you do implants, Invisalign, etc.) ❌ Slow mobile site (patients bounce before it loads) ❌ No reviews visible (patients don't trust you)

The Dental Website Checklist

☐ Online booking integrated ☐ Service pages for each offering ☐ Insurance and payment info visible ☐ Dentist and staff bios with photos ☐ Patient reviews featured ☐ Hours and location on every page ☐ Mobile-friendly design ☐ Click-to-call phone number ☐ New patient special or CTA ☐ Fast load times

Example: What This Looks Like

Say a dental practice in Phoenix is getting Google traffic but no bookings.

The problem:

  • No online booking
  • Insurance info buried on a PDF
  • No patient reviews visible
  • Mobile site is slow and clunky

The fix:

  • Add online booking that's set up for patient privacy
  • Create an "Insurance & Payment" page with clear info
  • Embed a Google review widget on the homepage
  • Shrink images and clean up the mobile layout

Each fix removes a reason a patient might leave and book somewhere else.
