I see it all the time. Small business owners look at big company websites—Apple, Nike, Tesla—and think: "I want my site to look like that."
Bad idea.
Those companies can afford to be vague and aspirational because everyone already knows what they do. You don't have that luxury.
What Big Companies Do (That You Shouldn't)
Apple doesn't list prices on their homepage because you're going to buy anyway. They have brand power. You don't.
Be transparent about pricing. Even if it's just ranges or starting points. People appreciate honesty, and it pre-qualifies your leads. When someone sees your starting price and still contacts you, they're already somewhat qualified.
Big companies use polished stock imagery because they're selling a lifestyle, not a relationship. You're a small business. People want to work with you, not a faceless corporation.
Use real photos. Show your face. Show your team. Show your actual work. Authenticity beats perfection every time. I'd rather see a slightly grainy photo of you in your actual office than a polished stock image of models in a fake conference room.
Big companies don't care if one person can't find their phone number. They're optimizing for scale. You need every lead you can get.
What you should do:
- Put your phone number in the header
- Make your contact form easy to find
- Add a click-to-call button for mobile users
The Small Business Advantage
Here's the thing big companies can't compete with: personal attention. You're not routing calls through three departments. You're not assigning account managers. You're the person they talk to. That's your edge. Use it.
Compare these two approaches:
Big Company Homepage: "Innovative solutions for tomorrow's challenges."
Your Homepage: "I help dentists in [Your City] get more new patients from Google search."
See the difference? Specific. Clear. Human.
Stop Trying to Look Bigger Than You Are
Your ideal clients aren't looking for a huge agency. They're looking for someone who understands their specific problem, responds quickly, and delivers what they promise.
You can be that person. But only if your website reflects who you actually are.
Big company websites are designed to reinforce brand image. Your website needs to generate leads. Two completely different jobs. Stop copying Apple. Start being yourself.
